Ac!d Commander: Finding Gary (parts 2 and 3)

This is my new game project: “Ac!d Commander.” It involves Metal Gear Ac!d for the PSP. Rather than being in written form, I decided to do an actual Let’s Play, making videos and everything. Finally, finally, finally have I have more than one video to share! Y’know, the devil in this process really is video editing. I mean, I could record games all the live long day…but editing them? That’s another story. So let’s talk about this story, the story of Solid Snake and a guy named Gary who’s trapped somewhere in the Lobito Lab. While I work to finish up this mission, we finally get to find out just who this Gary really is. Or…do we?

Ac!d Commander: Finding Gary (part 1)

Up this week is yet another single video, and it’s only the first part of a larger whole. I explain my motives concerning the division of the episode at the end of the video, but suffice to say, I’ll be cutting longer videos down into serviceable chunks from here on out. So what’s up with Snake? Well, he inside the Lobito Lab (or on the grounds or something, it’s a little hard to tell), and he’s on the hunt for a guy named Gary. It sounds mundane, but I promise that the results are anything but. Onward, Solid Snake! Onward!

Ac!d Commander: Now that we know how to move, let’s start moving!

With my strange introduction to this new game project in the long forgotten past, it’s time to really kick off the Metal Gear Ac!d party!

Up this week is only one video: my second episode. As Snake moves onto the grounds of the Lobito Laboratory,  I finally start chewing on the meat of the game — picking cards, taking down my enemies, staying in the shadows, and of course, royally fucking up at the wrong times. But hey, it’s all in good fun!

“Ac!d Commander” delayed (by a few months, I think)

Hmmm…reading that title might make one think that I’m talking about some new game. Some new game that’s been horrifically delayed because I WANT IT NOOOOOOW, as Veruca Salt once said. But no, this post is not about a new game. It is, verily, about an old game, well…a sorta old game. “Old” is a relative term, really. I mean, when you think about it, we’re all just different shades of “old.”

I really should delete that paragraph, but fuck it, I’m already here and typing, so I’ll just get on with it, then.

TL;DR My next game project, playing through Metal Gear Ac!d, has, unfortunately, met the back burner.

PSP Pursuits: And the winner is…

…Metal Gear Ac!d!

Oh, sorry, would you like more fanfare? Well too bad, because it’s Labor Day, which means that I get to be lazy for a WHOLE ENTIRE DAY. Outside of writing this post, that is. So fanfare schmanfare…let’s all just be lazy together!

Did you know that scientists recently purported that laziness is a sign of high intelligence? **SCIENCE** TOTALLY SAYS IT’S OKAY TO BE LAZY!

Of course, **SCIENCE** has also told us that everything will kill us in all the ways ever possible, so I bet that laziness is among those factors, so. How about we play some games instead?

Right, Metal Gear Ac!d…that’s what we were talking about. As I reported in the not-too-distant past, I’ve decided to start up a new game project that’s all about a PSP games. A shiny, happy complement of bloggers pointed me in the direction of some possible games to try. And what a range of games! And after a decent few weeks of trial and error (mostly error, as it turns out that my tablet does not really care for a PSP emulator or some of its games), I’ve finally chosen the winner, which I’ll mention again here for a third time: Metal Gear Ac!d.

I have to admit that, at first, the idea of playing a stealth/card game sounded intimidating. Also interesting but mostly like something that’d give me a hard time. I’ve played through the first few sequences and it’s…wow, it’s different! I don’t want to give too much away in terms of my reactions, but it indeed a Metal Gear card game, complete with some really rousing action, plenty of tense moments, lots of weird wackiness (can you say Killer Puppets??!), and…yep…deck building/management. Wikipedia calls the game a “turn-based collectible card tactical RPG,” which aren’t words I’ve ever heard strung together to describe a game. It’s really unlike any game I’ve ever played before, so that factor alone helped edge it to the top. Plus, I’ve never really found my footing with the Metal Gear games, and I’d like to think that this game could help as a gateway.

Also, unlike with some of the other game suggestions, it plays pretty well on my tablet. It is a tad on the glitchy side — once the whole thing died unwarranted, and once I found all my save data gone, so it’s a risk, but one that’s worth taking, I think.

So this game project will be similar to my previous ones in that I’ll offer up monthly posts on my progress, complete with too many screenshots, because that is a thing I’ve tended to do. These posts will start next month and will last for as long as it takes me to complete the game’s main story. I may pursue the occasional sidequest, if there are any, but they remain optional. And I welcome any and all help and advice from anyone who’s played the game, as I’m not above writing the “HELP! I’m so totally stuck!” post.

As with these projects, I of course need a spiffy umbrella title. So I’m ditching the temporary “PSP Pursuits” in favor of “Ac!d Commander.” It’s a bit silly…but it can’t be any sillier than killer puppets. Really.

Wish me luck as I head off into the PSP wilds with Snake and his deck of magical cards. I’ll be back in October with my first post in the series!

A New Game Project?? Some Thoughts.

So May is almost over, and I just realized earlier in the month I promised a surprise. Lest you were hoping for some homemade cookies or a hug or a kitty to pet (and my apologies of you were), here it…is?

For the past couple years, I’ve worked on a couple, for lack of a better phrase, “game projects” that have involved games from the past that I overlooked for any number of inconsequential reasons. The two projects I have on record involved Pokemon LeafGreen and Chrono Trigger, and I immensely enjoyed both. Despite the fact that I ended Chrono Trigger not long ago, I’ve already been thinking about what I might what to tackle next, and I think I’ve come up with something. It involves a little more than simply choosing a few games and doing up a poll as I’ve done in the past. That’s is why I’m writing about this now rather than later on this summer, which is when I’d like for the project to start. Maybe. Not sure yet, honestly.

With a total lack of subterfuge, the filler title for the project is “PSP Pursuits.” Not that involves multiple games, but it sounds better plural than “A PSP Pursuit,” which just doesn’t flow as well. And as the title gives away, it’s going to be all about one game for the PlayStation Portable.


In case you missed it, the PSP (2004-2014) was Sony’s entry into the handheld market that was supposed to be a serious competitor of the juggernaut that was (and still is) the Nintendo DS/3DS. From what I remember, it was actually quite popular for a good few years after its release. There were lots of TV commercials, and its games stood solidly right alongside all the other PlayStation titles in the game stores. A wide range of different types of games became available for it, and you could use it to watch movies that had been ported to its adorable UMD format. We bought a PSP, and maybe you did too. Despite its drawbacks, like the terrible analog controller and its high price tag ($250 compared to $150 for the DS), it wasn’t a bad little handheld. (And seriously, if you happen to remember the weird little PocketStation…to say the PSP was an improvement is an understatement.)

But enough history. I mentioned  that we bought a PSP. Well, we still have that PSP…um…somewhere. I think. I say that because a number of months ago I found a couple PSP games hiding in a long forgotten box, along with the original earbuds that came with the PSP. So that leads me to believe that the PSP is in our house — I just don’t where, and I’ve not had time to launch a search party. But finding those games made me wonder about actually playing games on the PSP if I ever found it. Would it be worth it? I was never much into the PSP, so I had no idea what kinds of games other than ports were available for it.

Eventually, my curiosity got the best of me, and in an effort to find out a bit more about this defunct system, I opted to download a PSP emulator onto my tablet and choose, site unseen, and game to play. One game that frequently popped up in the PSP’s “popular” category on download sites was the JRPG Brave Story: New Traveler. Without much more thought than “that sounds interesting,” I gave it a go. I’ve been playing the game on and off for a couple months now, and I’m really enjoying it. (It took me a number of tries to get the emulator’s settings right for my aging tablet, and they still aren’t perfect, but it works well enough. And I continue to tweak things as necessary.)

So what-the-hell-ever?, the crowd sighs. Well, what-the-hell is this: “PSP Pursuits” is going to be about a single PSP game, and I’d like to ask for your help in choosing which one. The kicker here is that I’d like to play a PSP exclusive, not a port, but a game that was developed solely for the PSP. I know there are some, but which ones were great and which ones should be avoided at all costs? Sure, I could do my research, but I’d rather get some first hand accounts from you, the players. (Of course, if the audience here is like screw you lady and the PSP!, then I’ll be on my own, obviously.)

I think I’m going to leave things there for the moment. As I said, this is really just a first pass at articulating what I have in mind; future posts will become more involved, especially if I happen to find our PSP! For now, my question to you is this:

Mission Chrono Trigger: And…Scene

You guys, you guys, YOU GUYS!


Okay, I’m done yelling. I was just kinda excited, because seriously, for awhile there, I thought I’d be playing this game until December. Believe you me, when I finally decided to battle Lavos after a bunch of stalling sidequesting, no one was more surprised than yours truly when THE END hit. And, just…wow about that. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt quite the same combination of joy/relief/sadness upon finishing a game as I did with Chrono Trigger. In truth, I’m sad to see it go but glad it’s over. For now anyway. I mean, multiple endings and all that. And I might as well get this out of the way first, but I apparently got typical ending #1. I did a bit of searching afterwards to find out more about all the different endings, and there are doozies, for sure. But I’m quite happy with the “normal” ending, even though it took about a zillion minutes to actually end. (Or maybe it was five. Who can say, really?)
