Totally 90s: JonBenet Ramsey

Welcome the next installment of my year-long look back at a decade defined by its extremes. Rap versus grunge; mullets versus pixies; Saved by the Bell versus NYPD Blue – the 1990s had it all, and then some. Every other week I’ll be reminiscing about some facet of the 1990s, potentially drowning in some ill-forgotten nostalgia despite my best efforts otherwise. Serving as inspiration is an utterly ridiculous but nonetheless intriguing list created by Huffington Post — 1990 Things from the 90s to End the Nostalgia Once and for All – and I’ll be using a random number generator to pick each week’s “topic.” So don’t have a cow, man, if I ask you to talk to the hand while take this sweet ride through the 90s. Word to your mother.

Week 13: HuffPost list #1582 – JonBenet Ramsey

This might sound a little weird, but I don’t feel comfortable posting any images of or links related to JonBenet Ramsey. So I’m not going to. In fact, I don’t even feel that comfortable going back into the news archives to re-read anything about her or her unfortunate death. It’s not that I feel any particular connection to her — it is awful what happened to her — it’s more that…well, I’d rather not forge any sort of connection between her and this blog. She was just so terribly young, and the images so her made up to look like an adult are just not my cup of tea.

What I might be getting at is that I don’t support the whole beauty pageant scene, especially when it involves pre-teen, let alone kindergarten-age girls. Yes, yes, yes…building self-esteem, personal confidence, a joy in showmanship is all well and good, but you guys…I just can’t with little girls all dressed up in powder-puff dresses and caked-on make-up. I. Just. Cannot.

If you’re totally confused as to my train of thought, I suppose I should note that JonBenet was a young beauty pageant star, brought about by her mother, which is partly why the news of her killing made such sensational headlines in the mid 1990s. For awhile there, her story was talked about ad infinitum on talk shows, the nightly news, and so on and so forth. From what I remember, the whole affair was just so strange, with accusations flying that her parents did it, or some group of radicals did it, or some random pedophile did it. Here name reappeared into the news just a few years ago due to some such, but I think her case may still be unsolved to this day.

Sorry that this isn’t much of a post. But it’s proof that the 90s weren’t all rainbows and sunshine. And writing about them now isn’t always either.

  1. Nope, 1990s wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine at all. I narrowly missed the 90s but I still understand the history xx great piece of writing cc
