Fifteen Songs – Pandora edition

Welp, here we are once again. It’s the week of July 4th, and that means it’s time for another edition of Fifteen Songs! Aren’t you just a bunch of lucky ducks?

Why are ducks considering to be among the luckiest of waterfowl? Outside of wood ducks and a few other ornate species, ducks would seem to have the short end of the stick when it comes to being lucky. They are short, slow, and common. Not that I’m trying to sell ducks short of their due. We actually have a very nice duck duo that roams our neighborhood – Harold and Maude. At least that’s what we call them. I once came home to find them both perched on our roof, just hanging out. Y’know, like ducks do. Hm. Maybe it is pretty lucky to be a duck these days, especially in a neighborhood that’s especially kind to animals, as ours is.

Um…so what was I talking about? Oh right…all the musics!

As we’ve hit the start of July, it’s time for me to fall back on one of my favorite traditions, playing the ol’ “Fifteen Songs” game, whereby one sticks their music player of choice on shuffle and shamelessly posts the first fifteen songs that play. In the past, I did this on my iPod. With my Five of Shuffle series in full swing, I’d just been picking whatever fifteen songs happen to show up in queue at the moment. Now that I’m in the throes of the final few hundred songs on my iPod (having had it continuously play on shuffle for over two years is kind of astonishing, but here we are), I think I’m going to go a different route. Last year I was invited to do a music shuffly thing, and I opted to use my Pandora account for it, and it turned our kinda cool, and kinda strange considering that I had to go through a number of songs that I had never heard before. But, because it was also kinda fun, I think I’ll do the same thing here – stick Pandora on shuffle and see what pops up. As usual, I’ll offer up some thoughts on the first five songs, and then will post links to the remaining ten.

Let’s get weird, shall we?

1. Can’t Get You Out of My Head – Kylie Minogue

Like most intelligent, creative, and brilliant people, or so I imagine 😏, I often get songs stuck in my head. And more often than not, they aren’t of the “good” variety. One way I found around this was to accept said songs into my life wholly and without question by sticking them on my iPod. This massive 2001 Kylie Minogue hit is one such example. I forced myself to get it after hearing it, not only on the radio, but most glaringly, on a TV car commercial. I now neither like more hate this song. It’s a thing; it’s fine. I’m not exactly sure which on of my Pandora channels picked up on this, but it’s a thing. It’s fine.

2. We Are the Ones – The Coup

The Coup channel is a relative new addition to my Pandora round-up. I don’t know what took me so long. I’ve long known of this amazing hip hop group, what with their funky, soulful, almost punkish, political approach to the genre. At the very least, I defy you not to shake yo’ ass while listening to this incredible jam right here.

3. Run for Your Life – DJ Shadow

I have to admit that I’ve fallen a bit off the DJ Shadow train since Endtroducing….. and Preemptive Strike, which are quite possibly the best two sampling albums in existence. But, y’know, it doesn’t much pay to get stuck in the past. I haven’t been listening much to my DJ Shadow channel, so I should really get off my duff and back on the train.

4. Bad Girl – New York Dolls

I don’t think I will ever not like any sort of music that’s preceded by the word “glam.” The New York Dolls were just so sincere behind all the spandex and fringe…although the latter went a long way in terms of entertainment. Most of the 70s were not kind to the group, but the hits that they had really fuckin’ hit.

5. Down to Drain – Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters

Whaddya mean you don’t have a Buck Satan and the 666 Shooters Pandora channel?? Actually…okay…I didn’t know that I did. Or rather, we did, since my husband and I share the channel. Rockabilly + hardcore punk = this band. I don’t listen to the channel much, so I can’t imagine what else would pop up. With this particular song, while the lyrics sound rather genuine, it kinda…well, it kinda makes me laugh. Its overall sound is..absurdly funny. In a good way?

And here are the remaining 10 songs that shuffled through. Click on the images for links to each song on YouTube. Happy listening (and happy 4th)!

6. Energy Drink – Virtual Riot

7. The One to Sing the Blues – Motörhead

8. Heart and Soul – Huey Lewis and the News (😍)

9. You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch – Thurl Ravenscroft (😅 Christmas, of course)

10. Jealous Guy – Roxy Music

11. Can I – Alina Baraz & Galimatias

12. Blue Movie – Sneaker Pimps

13. M-Seq – Mr. Oizo

14. Santa Baby – Eartha Kitt (🤣 OMG)

15. Classic – Heiroglyphics
