A few years ago I hosted an “experiment” on Facebook in which I asked people to send me music. I felt a bit stuck with my then-current rotation of music, and I thought that having some new input from people who weren’t all necessarily aware of my musical tastes might help crack open the floodgates. I posted a simple request: “send me a song that I should own if I don’t already,” and one stipulation: the song had to be on iTunes. Over the course of a month, I collected a wide assortment of songs — some I knew and many I didn’t — and I’m still amazed and awarded each time I listen to the playlist that came out of the trial. Through it I was introduce to the likes of Antaeus, Neko Case, Brandi Carlile, Paramore, Tiësto, and, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Walkmen, and others. I loved exploring all the new sounds that my friends had introduced, and I loved that so many of them were new to me.
I’m currently staring at an iTunes card that’s been in my possession for sometime now, and that “stuck” feeling is once again upon me. Over the past few days I’ve visited iTunes with such a strong sense of “I want it ALL, but I don’t know what ALL is!” that each time I’ve come away empty-handed. So here and now, I’m turning to all you wonderful people here in the blogosphere with a simple request:
SEND ME SONGS!
New songs, old songs, ancient songs. Song that make you laugh, songs that make you cry, songs that make you laugh but others cry. Your favorite songs, your guilty pleasures, your one and onlys. Send me songs that I should own, need to own, and want to own but don’t know it yet. Leave them in the comment section or tweet them to me at @recollects_play.
No response will go unheeded! No song will go unconsidered! If I already own a song you send, I’ll let you know. Think your musical tastes could never match my own? You might be surprised. (You can check out my iTunes Diary posts for a small sampling of what has worked for me.) Send me as many songs as you like; but I will say that I only have one iTunes card, so the playlist limit will probably be somewhere around 20 songs, depending on the prices of the individual songs. And oh yes, the songs need to be on iTunes. You can send any songs you like — if the songs aren’t on iTunes, I’ll still happily look them up and listen. Is there a deadline, you ask? Umm…probably? Let’s say December 25th, how’s that? Look, it’ll be like the 25 Days of Christmas, only with music! What if you don’t get enough songs, you ask? You think I’ll have trouble using up an iTunes card?? Now that’s just silly, even if I am stuck on what to buy! After Christmas, I’ll make my choices (even if they are all my own) and then will put up a special post on or around New Year’s Day about the chosen songs. I promise that each and every one will go onto my iPod and into my heart.
