Send Me Songs! Any Songs!

Awkward dancing/posing optional.

A few years ago I hosted an “experiment” on Facebook in which I asked people to send me music. I felt a bit stuck with my then-current rotation of music, and I thought that having some new input from people who weren’t all necessarily aware of my musical tastes might help crack open the floodgates. I posted a simple request: “send me a song that I should own if I don’t already,” and one stipulation: the song had to be on iTunes. Over the course of a month, I collected a wide assortment of songs — some I knew and many I didn’t — and I’m still amazed and awarded each time I listen to the playlist that came out of the trial. Through it I was introduce to the likes of Antaeus, Neko Case, Brandi Carlile, Paramore, Tiësto, and, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic ZerosThe Walkmen, and others. I loved exploring all the new sounds that my friends had introduced, and I loved that so many of them were new to me.

I’m currently staring at an iTunes card that’s been in my possession for sometime now, and that “stuck” feeling is once again upon me. Over the past few days I’ve visited iTunes with such a strong sense of “I want it ALL, but I don’t know what ALL is!” that each time I’ve come away empty-handed. So here and now, I’m turning to all you wonderful people here in the blogosphere with a simple request:

SEND ME SONGS!

New songs, old songs, ancient songs. Song that make you laugh, songs that make you cry, songs that make you laugh but others cry. Your favorite songs, your guilty pleasures, your one and onlys. Send me songs that I should own, need to own, and want to own but don’t know it yet. Leave them in the comment section or tweet them to me at @recollects_play.

No response will go unheeded! No song will go unconsidered! If I already own a song you send, I’ll let you know. Think your musical tastes could never match my own? You might be surprised. (You can check out my iTunes Diary posts for a small sampling of what has worked for me.) Send me as many songs as you like; but I will say that I only have one iTunes card, so the playlist limit will probably be somewhere around 20 songs, depending on the prices of the individual songs. And oh yes, the songs need to be on iTunes. You can send any songs you like — if the songs aren’t on iTunes, I’ll still happily look them up and listen. Is there a deadline, you ask? Umm…probably? Let’s say December 25th, how’s that? Look, it’ll be like the 25 Days of Christmas, only with music! What if you don’t get enough songs, you ask? You think I’ll have trouble using up an iTunes card?? Now that’s just silly, even if I am stuck on what to buy! After Christmas, I’ll make my choices (even if they are all my own) and then will put up a special post on or around New Year’s Day about the chosen songs. I promise that each and every one will go onto my iPod and into my heart.

With thanks, love, and music,

  1. This is such a great idea! I’ve been looking up some of other people’s suggestions here, because I’ve been needing some new music lately too. Here are some of my picks:

“Spread Your Love” — Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
“Mercy” — Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
“The Wrote & The Writ” — Johnny Flynn
“Mama, You Been On My Mind” — Jeff Buckley (I love Bob Dylan but this cover is magic)
“Happy When It Rains” — Jesus and Mary Chain (the demo version is great too if you’re into JAMC!)
“Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space” — Spiritualized
    “Wisdom” — Brian Jonestown Massacre

And these two always make me laugh:
“Thou Shalt Always Kill” — Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip
    “Bob Dylan’s 115th Dream”

    1. So fantastic — thank you! I’ll be sure to transfer all these onto the list of possibilities. (P.S. Love BRMC! I have a bunch of their stuff but not sure about the ones you mentioned.)

  2. I strongly suggest the entire “Catching Fire” soundtrack, particularly Elastic Heart by Sia and Devil May Cry by The Weeknd.

    Also good…
“Recipe for Disaster” by Morcheeba (actually their whole “Blood Like Lemonade” album is excellent)
“Breath of Life” by Florence + The Machine
The album “Of Birds, Bees, Butterflies, Etc..” by Late Night Alumni
Pretty much anything ever by Ellie Goulding, particular favorites being “Guns and Horses”, “Starry Eyed”, “Burn” and “Mirror”
“Me Voy a Morir de Tanto Amor” by Alberto Iglesias –not entirely sure if this one is on iTunes but it’s lovely nonetheless.
“Get the Party Started” by Shirley Bassey (same as above)
“Bottles”, “Crying Blood” and “Shark in the Water” by V.V. Brown
“Fell in Love With A Girl” by James Wolpert (don’t know if stuff from music competitions is allowed but his version is SO much better than the original, imo)
“Come Back Clean” by The Crystal Method

I love the idea behind this post of yours…I get “stuck” with my music a lot too. I might use some of the suggestions here as inspiration! 😀

    1. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I’ve transferred all these to my list and look forward to listening. I might have that Crystal Method song somewhere, but otherwise these are all new to me. And please, feel free to take this idea and run with it! 🙂

  3. I usually listen to Debs and Errol. I have no idea if they’re on ITunes. But they push all my nerd buttons. To stick with gaming related songs, they have three off of their parody EP: A Virtual World, Falling Quickly, and Commodore 64 as well as Walkthrough on their first album. My favorite from them would have to be Tribbles.

  4. Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness
    Lindsey Stirling – Elements
Calvin Harris feat. Ellie Goulding – I Need Your Love
Armin van Buuren feat. Trevor Guthrie – This Is What It Feels Like
The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
    OneRepublic – Counting Stars
    Jessie Ware – Wildest Moments

I have tons more music I love, but those are my personal favorites at the moment. 🙂

    1. WOW! Grammatical missteps aside, thanks a million for the suggestions! I’ve got ’em all on my list and will consider each and every one, except for Love is a Battlefield and Mercy Mercy Me — those I already own (and for good reason 🙂 ). Choosing only 20 songs is not going to be easy, but the process of gathering them is certainly fun!

  6. First of all, I’d just like to say PA-RA-MORE! I’m a total Parawhore… I just love Hailey and the boys!

I’ve got a couple of albums to recommend. I mean I like the whole album so why not right?

Ceremonials by Florence + the Machine
Electra Heart by Marina and the Diamonds

But if you want specific songs, I can pick them out for you. But seriously, the whole album is worth it!

As a single song that brings out a lot of emotion in me…

    Cut by Plumb

    1. Thank you for the recommendations! Albums are perfectly fine – I certainly don’t mind going through them to pick specific songs. (Though if any stand out to you, I’d be happy to know.)

Paramore is pretty great, no doubt! I love Ms. Williams’ voice – down-to-earth and expressive.

      1. Seven Devils, What the Water Gave Me, Spectrum are what first come to mind from Ceremonials

And Lies, Power and Control, Fear and Loathing from Electra Heart.

Other songs are Daniel by Bats for Lashes
and I Follow Rivers by Lykke Li

  7. What a fantastic idea. I wish I’d thought of that. I might steal, ahem, loan your idea and give you full credit. A song I’d give you is Sail by AWOLNATION. It’s an odd “like” for myself as I discuss in one of my “I’m listening to…” post. Also, I’m addicted to itunes too as I discuss in another post. I’m not advertising my blog here, honest. I look forward to reading more of your blog 🙂

    1. And you’ve now got yourself a new follower. 🙂 (That would be me, by the way, err… obviously and stuff.) Please take the idea, churn it up, and use it as your own; and I’ll be sure to send you a song if/when that happens!

And thank you for the song. It’s now on the list.

      1. I did a post about it a couple of weeks ago under my “I’m listening to category” mainly because I was so surprised how much I liked the album as it’s way different from my usual

    1. Thanks! But your comment made me re-think the whole “must be in iTunes” thing I mentioned, so I edited it out. ANY song is fair game! Though still, if it’s not in iTunes then it probably won’t end up on this particular playlist. But that doesn’t mean it may not end up on my iPod someday! So while you don’t have to, if you still like to send a song, I’ll listen to it and look to see if it’s in iTunes. If not, then no harm done. 😀

      1. Then in that case, there’s “Death Should not have taken Thee” by Kagamine Rin and Len, there’s also a really good English cover of this song by JubyPhonic if you don’t like Japanese songs. And Kagamine Rin and Len’s cover of “Electric Angel”. There’s also “Rubik’s Cube” by Athlete, and this one is actually an English song. I’m not sure if any of these are on iTunes, because, like I said, I don’t really use iTunes. But there’s a few more suggestions anyway!

  8. I am going to do specific albums so no questions will be necessary:

    Songs: Ohia ‘Axxess & Ace’
    Janelle Monae ‘The ArchAndroid’
    Radical Face ‘Ghost’
Burden Brothers ‘Buried in Your Black Heart’
Balthrop, Alabama ‘Your Big Plans & Our Little Town’

    I think that’s eclectic enough.

    1. So awesome — thanks! Got them all on my list. Except for Janelle Monae, none of these artists are familiar to me, so I look forward to checking them out.
